Introduction |
"Azhwar Emperumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Sharanam" is a line often uttered by followers of Thennacharya Sampradayam. "Azhwar" refers to Swami Nammazhwar. "Emperumanar" refers to Swami Ramanujar. "Jeeyar" refers to Swami Manavala Mamunigal.
Perhaps many Sri Vaishnavas may be able to appreciate why Sri Azhwar and Sri Emperumanar have been included but there are also many Sri Vaishnavas who genuinely seek to appreciate why Sri Jeeyar has been included in this special set.
This article attempts to answer that question and also, in the process, aims to highlight why Sri Jeeyar is much more special than even Sri Azhwar and Sri Emperumanar!
A note to my dear readers: This is a highly nuanced and deep topic and hence, adiyen gave importance to elaboration and not brevity. Also, attempted to cater to complete beginners in Sri Vaishnavam and to even Sanathana Dharmis of other Sampradayas.

* Part A.1 - Thiru Avathara Swaroopam * |
A.1.1 - Thiru Avathara Swaroopam - Sri Azhwar |
When Sri Azhwar's Parents had requested Sri Thirukkurungudi Nambi Perumal to bless Them with a child, the Perumal declared that He would take birth as Their child and then, Sri Azhwar was born. Elders often say, "It is Thirukkurungudi Nambi who was born as Thirukkurugoor Nambi" to remind us that Sri Azhwar was born with Paripoorna Anugraham of Bhagavan.
A.1.2 - Thiru Avathara Swaroopam - Sri Emperumanar |
-
When Sriman Nathamunigal chanted "kanninun sirutthaambu" for 12000 times and Sri Azhwar appeared in front of Him, Sri Azhwar not only revealed 4000 Divya Prabandham to Sriman Nathamunigal but also revealed that Sri Emperumanar is the "dakshina baahu" of Sri Azhwar and that Sri Emperumanar will fulfill the then-incomplete mission of Sri Azhwar [i.e. the mission of paving the way to Paramapadham for all Sri Vaishnavas]. Sri Azhwar also advised Sriman Nathamunigal to consider Sri Emperumanar as none other than Sri Azhwar Himself.
-
Also, when Sri Keshava Somayaji [Sri Emperumanar's Father] performed Puthra Kameshti Yagam, Sri Parthasarathy Perumal of Thiruvallikkeni Divyadesam granted Him a boon that He, Sri Parthasarathy Perumal, would take birth as Sri Keshava Somayaji's son. This underlines the fact that Sri Emperumanar too was born with Paripoorna Anugraham of Bhagavan.
A.1.3 - Thiru Avathara Swaroopam - Sri Jeeyar |
Sri Jeeyar had 8 magnificent Shishyas and He addressed Them as Ashtadiggajas.
-
One of the Ashtadiggajas of Sri Jeeyar is the most noble Sri Koil Kandhaadai Annan. Initially, Sri Koil Kandhaadai Annan was not keen to associate Himself with Sri Jeeyar. Sri Emperumanar then appeared in Sri Koil Kandhaadai Annan's dream and revealed that it is He, Sri Emperumanar, who has taken another Thiru Avatharam as Sri Jeeyar.
-
Also, Sri Ranganatha Perumal Himself appeared in the dreams of several Kandhaadai Ayyangars and urged them all to take refuge in the golden lotus feet of Sri Jeeyar saying, "It is Me, Sri Ranganatha Perumal, who has descended on earth as Sri Jeeyar!" Here again, we see that Sri Jeeyar too was born with Paripoorna Anugraham of Bhagavan.
A.1.4 - Thiru Avathara Swaroopam - Highlights |
Bhagavan considers peerless jnaanis as His very life force. Hence, Bhagavan never distinguishes between Himself and Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar. In fact, He considers Them far more important than Himself. That is why He declared Himself as Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar.
Also, Sri Azhwar declared that Sri Emperumanar is Sri Azhwar's right hand and that one must respect Sri Emperumanar as one would Sri Azhwar. Sri Emperumanar declared that Sri Jeeyar is none other than Himself. |
A.1.5 - Thiru Avathara Swaroopam - Quotes from Works of Sri Ashtadiggajas |
* Part A.2 - Thiru Avathara Sthalam - Thirukkurugoor * |
A.2.1 - Thirukkurugoor - Sri Azhwar |
Sri Nammazhvar has addressed Himself as "Kurugoor Shatakopan" in His Pasurams - Sri Nammazhvar was born in Thirukurugur, which is also known as "Sri Azhwar Thirunagari" as a mark of honouring Sri Azhwar.
Here is the Thiruvaimozhi 4-10-11 Pasuram [meant for Sri Azhwar Thirunagari Divyadesam] where Sri Azhwar identifies Himself as "vaN kurugoor nagaraan":
A.2.2 - Thirukkurugoor - Sri Emperumanar |
Before Sri Emperumanar made His appearance on this earth, Sri Azhwar ordered Sri Madhurakavi Azhwar to boil the water of the river ThiruThaamiraparani. When He did so, a Vigraha rose from it. Sri Madhurakavi Azhwar had never seen such an image before and prayed to Sri Azhwar for further guidance.
That night, Sri Azhwar appeared in Sri Madhurakavi Azhwar’s dream and said, "He is the very meaning of my Thiruvaimozhi pasuram 'Poliga Poliga Poliga' and He is the Acharya who will descend on this earth in the future i.e. The 'Bhavishyathacharya,’ to release all Prapannas from the cycle of samsara," and this Bhavishyathacharya later appeared as Sri Emperumanar.
Even today, this Thirumeni of Sri Bhavishyathacharyar has a Sannidhi dedicated in Thirukurugur. Thus, Thirukkurugoor is very much the first Kshetra where Sri Emperumanar made His divine descent.
A.2.3 - Thirukkurugoor - Sri Jeeyar |
In "Sri YathindraPravana Prabahavam" Grantham [the Divine History of Sri Manavala Mamunigal], Sri Pillailokam Jiyar provides a quotation that reads: “Sri Adhisheshan made one more ThiruAvatharam in the birthplace of Sri Nammazhwar. This ThiruAvatharam happened on the day of the Moolam star in the month of Thula.” Sri Jeeyar too made His ThiruAvatharam at Thirukkurugoor.
A.2.4 - Thirukkurugoor - Highlights |
Thus, we can see that Thirukkurugoor became the common Thiru Avathara Sthalam for Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar. Sri Vaishnava Elders always say that Thirukkurugoor is the native place of Sri Vaishnavas [i.e. from the Aathma perspective] and that "Azhwar Emperumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Sharanam" specifically refers to the Their Divya Mangala Vigrahas at Thirukkurugoor. |
* Part A.3 - Thiru Avathara Swabhaavam * |
A.3.1 - Thiru Avathara Swabhaavam - Sri Azhwar |
Sri Azhwar identifies Himself as Sriman Narayana's Divya Paadhukaa. Thus, Sriman Narayana's Divya Paadhukaa [placed on our heads when we worship at Temples] is referred to as "Sri Shatakopan" or "Sri Shataari" [which are names of Sri Azhwar].
Sri Azhwar also declares that He is the servant of Sriman Narayana's servants [Thiruvaimozhi # 3-7-10]:
A.3.2 - Thiru Avathara Swabhaavam - Sri Emperumanar |
Sri Emperumanar identified Himself as Sri Azhwar's Divya Paadhukaa.
When Sri Emperumanar went on a Yathra to Sri Azhwar Thirunagari Divyadesam, He requested Sri Azhwar to grant a boon that Sri Azhwar's Divya Paadhukaa in that Divyadesam bears His name. Sri Azhwar not only immediately granted the boon but also declared that every honour accorded to Sri Emperumanar is an honour accorded to Sri Azhwar.
Thus, Azhwar's Divya Paadhukaa at Sri Azhwar Thirungari Divyadesam is referred to as "Sri Raamaanusan" and Sri Emperumanar is known as "maaran adi paninthu uinthavan" ["Maaran" is Sri Azhwar] as explained in Sri Ramanuja Nootranthathi Pasuram # 1:
A.3.3 - Thiru Avathara Swabhaavam - Sri Jeeyar |
Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai was the glorious Acharya who had completely renovated Sri Azhwar Thirunagari Divyadesam [which had become a forest because people had fled after the bloodthirsty Islamic attack on Srirangam] and performed the ThiruPrathishtai of Sri Azhwar after renovating the Kshetra.
Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai also did the ThiruPrathishtai of Sri Bhavishyathacharyar and built "Sri Ramanuja Chathurvedhi Mangalam" around the Sannidhi.
Sri Jeeyar became the Shishya of Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai and was instructed to take care of Sri Bhavishyathacharyar Sannidhi Kainkaryam. Sri Jeeyar executed the order with utmost dedication and devotion. He also composed Sri Yathiraja Vimshathi and was praised as "Yatheendrapravanar" [One who has boundless devotion for Sri Emperumanar] by Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai.
True to Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai's guidance, Sri Jeeyar considered Himself as the Divya Paadhukaa of Sri Emperumanar and was completely dedicated to His Acharya Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai [who was a very great Bhaktha of Sri Emperumanar]. Sri Jeeyar declares thus in Sri Aarthi Prabandham Pasuram # 10, 11, 21:

A.3.5 - Thiru Avathara Swabhaavam - Quotes from Works of Sri Ashtadiggajas |
Section B - Parama Vishesha Kainkarya Vaibhavam |
Section B aims to elaborate the remarkable continuity in the glorious kainkaryam rendered by Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar towards the 4 foundational pillars of Sri Vaishnavam: Part B.1 - Dhvaya Manthram: Explains how Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar have upheld the importance of the very Manthram that confers Sri Vaishnava status on a Jivathma. Part B.2 - 4000 Divya Prabandham: Explains how Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar have ensured that we benefit from the most important corpus of knowledge, which was exclusively revealed for those who perform Sharanagathi in the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana [i.e. Sri Vaishnavas]. Part B.3 - Thiruvaimozhi: Explains how Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar share a beautiful, unique relationship through Thiruvaimozhi and how They ensured that Sri Vaishnavas truly benefit from Thiruvaimozhi, the core of 4000 Divya Prabandham. Part B.4 - Sriranga Mangalashasanam: Explains how Sri Azhwar, Sri Emperumanar and Sri Jeeyar performed a vitalizing Mangalashasanam for Sri Ranganatha Perumal and Srirangam, which is a cornerstone kainkaryam for every Sri Vaishnava. |
* Part B.1 - Dhvaya Manthra Artha Anusandhana Kainkaryam * |
B.1.1 - Dhvaya Manthra Artha Anusandhana Kainkaryam - Significance |
Dhvayam, also known as Manthra Rathnam, is the most important Rahasya Manthram for Sri Vaishnavas. Our Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya Acharyas place it on a pedestal higher than that of even Thiru Ashtaksharam and have always exhibited utmost respect and devotion towards this Manthram.
This Manthram is named thus because it comprises of 2 lines that are chanted together as a single Manthram. One's Sharanagathi is complete only when one repeats the Dhvaya Manthram after the Acharya [when the Acharya performs the Manthra Upadesham during Pancha Samskaram / Samashrayanam] and it is at this most crucial point the Jivathma [of the Shishya] becomes the wedded wife of the Paramathma.
B.1.2 - Dhvaya Manthra Artha Anusandhana Kainkaryam - Sri Azhwar |
Dhvaya Manthram is called “Sharanagathi Manthram” and Thiruvaimozhi is called “Dheerga Sharanagathi.”
Our Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya Acharyas have explained that Sri Azhwar's magnum opus, Thiruvaimozhi, is nothing but an expansion of Dhvaya Manthra Artha Vishesham! Even an entire Rahasya Grantha [called Saara Sangraham, authored by Sri Pillailokacharyar] has been dedicated to explain just this fact!
When Sriman Nathamunigal chanted the great “Kanninun Sirutthambu” 12000 times and Sri Azhwar appeared in front of Him, Sri Azhwar performed Pancha Samskaram to Sriman Nathamunigal, gave the Upadesham of Rahasya Thraya Manthram [including Dhvaya Manthram, of course] and also, explained their Rahasya Artha Vishesham.
Only after Dhvaya Manthra Upadesham [and Dhvaya Manthra Rahasya Artha Upadesham] did Sri Azhwar reveal 4000 Divya Prabandham, along with the Rahasya Arthas of the Pasurams, to Sriman Nathamunigal.
Only because of Sri Azhwar's Dhvaya Manthra Upadesham did Sriman Nathamunigal acquire the right to perform Pancha Samskaram and continue the Sri Vaishnava Guru Parampara lineage. And for the same reason, Sri Azhwar is not only part of the group of 12 Azhwars but also an Acharya in the Sri Vaishnava Guru Parampara.
B.1.3 - Dhvaya Manthra Artha Anusandhana Kainkaryam - Sri Emperumanar |
Sri Emperumanar has revealed His enormous regard for Dhvaya Manthram several times in His Divya ThiruAvatharam. Here are 3 most memorable events:
-
When Sri Emperumanar decided to perform the naamakaranam for the twin boy babies of Sri Kooratthazhwan [viz. Sri Parashara Bhattar & Sri Veda Vyasa Bhattar], He asked one of His Shishyas, Sri Embaar, to bring the babies to Him. When Sri Embaar placed the babies in front of Sri Emperumanar, a highly astonishing event happened: Sri Emperumanar asked, “O Embaar! I’m able to smell the exquisite fragrance of Dhvaya Manthram from the bodies of these effulgent babies. What did you do?”
Sri Embaar replied, “O Acharya, as the babies were radiant, while carrying them, this humble self chanted Dhvaya Manthram to safeguard them from the effect of evil eyes!”
A highly impressed Sri Emperumanar appointed Sri Embaar as the Acharya of the children.
-
When Sri Thirukkurungudi Nambi Perumal of Thirukkurungudi Divyadesam asked Sri Emperumanar the secret Manthram responsible for His glorious success [i.e. in His mission of laying down an easy path to Sri Vaikuntam], Sri Emperumanar declared Dhvaya Manthram as the secret of His success.
-
In one of His final 6 instructions for His followers, Sri Emperumanar instructed that His followers must perform regular Anusandhanam of Dhvaya Manthram and its Artham.
B.1.4 - Dhvaya Manthra Artha Anusandhana Kainkaryam - Sri Jeeyar |
As a true, ardent follower of Sri Ramanujarya Divyagnya, Sri Jeeyar performed regular Anusandhanam of Dhvaya Manthram and its Artham. His Anusandhanam was such an exemplary role model to all Sri Vaishnavas that it was eulogized by His Shishyas as well.
Sri Erumbiyappa, who documented the daily routine of Sri Jeeyar, observes that Sri Jeeyar’s lips always twitched slightly because of the continuous chanting of Dhvaya Manthram and that Sri Jeeyar’s Thirumeni had horripilation because of Dhvaya Manthra Artha Dhyanam.
Sri Prathivadhi Bhayankaram Anna too observes that Sri Jeeyar had performed successful saakshaathkaaram of Bhagavan Sri Madhusudhana because of His continuous Anusandhanam of Dhvaya Manthram.
B.1.5 - Dhvaya Manthra Artha Anusandhana Kainkaryam - Highlights |
Here, we can observe a beautiful pattern emerging:

B.2.1 - 4000 Divya Prabandha Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Significance |
The Paramathma takes Avatharas in all 4 Yugams for saadhu parithraanam. Likewise, the Vedhas too take Avatharas for jeevaathma ujjeevanam – in the form of Smrithis, Ithihasas, etc.. 4000 Divya Prabandham is one such Avathara of the Vedhas.
Vedhas, in their original form, primarily celebrate the greatness of Bhagavan as Paramapadha Nathan in Sri Vaikuntam. Ithihasas and Puranas primarily celebrate the greatness of Bhagavan’s Vibhava Avatharas like Sri Varaha, Sri Rama, Sri Krishna.
4000 Divya Prabandham, the most refined essence of Vedhas in Thamizh, is revealed exclusively for Kali Yugam. It primarily celebrates the greatness of Bhagavan’s Archaa Avatharas like Thiruvarangan, Thiruvenkatavan, Thiruvatthiyooraan, etc.. The only pre-requisite to learn 4000 Divya Prabandham is undergoing Pancha Samskaram [as this is an official, explicit declaration of one’s desire to reach Moksham through the great Sri Emperumanar Thiruvadi Sambandham].
Ideally, a Sri Vaishnava should spend time [kaalakshepam] in learning the 4000 Divya Prabandham, its corresponding Acharya Vyakhyanam, associated Rahasya Granthams and Rahasya Grantha Vyakhyanams [and live a life in alignment with those teachings].
B.2.2 - 4000 Divya Prabandha Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Sri Azhwar |
Sri Azhwar is the Sri Vaishnava Kula Pathi because:
-
As an Azhwar, He gave the essence of the 4 Vedas as 4 Divya Prabandhams viz. Thiruviruttham [Rg Veda Saaram], Thiruvasiriyam [Yajur Veda Saaram], Thiruvaimozhi [Sama Veda Saaram] and Periya Thiruvanthathi [Atharvana Veda Saaram].
-
As an Acharya, He performed the Upadesham of complete 4000 Divya Prabandham and its meanings to Sriman Nathamunigal. When Sriman Nathamunigal had requested Sri Azhwar, He knew only about Thiruvaimozhi and so, asked only for Thiruvaimozhi. However, the most compassionate Sri Azhwar bestowed all 4000 Divya Prabandham Pasurams [not only those sung by Himself but also those sung by all other Azhwars].
B.2.3 - 4000 Divya Prabandha Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Sri Emperumanar |
Sri Emperumanar exhibited immense affection for Azhwars and 4000 Divya Prabandham. 4 key points that bring out this sacred truth:
-
Sri Emperumanar was the one to perform the ThiruPrathishtai of Azhwar & Acharya Divya Mangala Vigrahas at Srirangam and other major Divyadesams. This is one of those moments where Sri Emperumanar exhibited His Upakaara Smrithi [gratitude] towards Azhwars.
-
Sri Emperumanar respected every syllable of 4000 Divya Prabandham. He sincerely implemented whatever was stated by Azhwars in the Pasurams. 2 of the many famous examples:
- A few young lads of Srirangam had drawn an image of Sri Ranganatha Perumal on the ground and were playing a game, in which they were emulating their elders performing Temple Kainkaryam. When Sri Emperumanar passed by, one of the children innocently offered a handful of sand as “Sri Ranganatha Perumal’s Prasadam” and, without a moment’s hesitation, Sri Emperumanar accepted it saying “Mahaprasadam!” When Shisyas expressed astonishment, Sri Emperumanar clarified using Sri Poigai Azhwar’s Mudhal Thiruvanthathi Pasuram # 44 [Bhagavan resides in those places where His Bhakthas offer Him affectionate, sincere kainkaryam].
- When Sri Emperumanar came across a Pasuram of Sri Andal in Nacchiyar Thirumozhi, He promptly arranged for 100 urns of pure, fresh butter and 100 urns of akkaara adisil for Thirumalirunjolai Sri Kallazhagar [as stated in the Pasuram] on behalf of Sri Andal. This is when Sri Andal declared that Sri Emperumanar is indeed Her elder brother!
-
One day, a few Shishyas approached Sri Embaar and requested Him to clarify the meaning of a specific line in Sri Periyazhwar Thirumozhi. Sri Embaar placed the Padhukas of Sri Emperumanar on His head and meditated on Sri Emperumanar's Lotus Feet for a few moments. He easily answered the question thereafter!
Moral of This Story: Sincere dhyanam of Sri Emperumanar’s Divya Padhukas alone will bestow us with flawless knowledge of 4000 Divya Prabandham [both Moolam and its great Artham]. Both Thiruvaimozhi and Periya Thirumozhi Thaniyans too reflect this truth.
-
Sri Emperumanar performed the Artha Samrakshanam of Divya Prabandham by commencing the kainkaryam of documenting authentic Divya Prabandha Vyakhyanams.
Sri Thirukkurugai Piraan Pillaan, Sri Nanjeeyar, Sri Nampillai, Sri Periyavachan Pillai, Sri Vadakku Thiruveethi Pillai, Sri Vadhikesari Azhagiya Manavala Jeeyar and Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Nayanar took this noble kainkaryam to completion. Sri Pillailokacharyar took this kainkaryam to a higher level by authoring Rahasya Granthas based on 4000 Divya Prabandham.
-
One of the 6 final instructions of Sri Emperumanar is that a Sri Vaishnava should learn and teach 4000 Divya Prabandham.
B.2.4 - 4000 Divya Prabandha Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Sri Jeeyar |
The primary contributions of Sri Jeeyar towards 4000 Divya Prabandham:
-
Divyadesa Mangalashasanam and Divyadesa Kainkaryam as a Tribute to Azhwars:
- Mangalashasana Yathras to Divyadesams & Azhwar ThiruAvathara Sthalams
- Appointment of Shishyas to perform Kainkaryam at various Divyadesams
- Appointment of Sri Appillai, one of the Ashtadiggajas, to compose Vaazhi Thirunaamam for all Azhwars
-
Special Mangalashasanam and Kainkaryam for Sri Emperumanar and His own Acharya Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai:
- Every kainkaryam Sri Jeeyar did - including those done towards Bhagavan and Azhwars - was solely for the joy of Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai and Sri Emperumanar
- Appointment of Shishyas to perform Kainkaryam at Thirunarayanapuram [Melkote], the most favourite Kshetra of Sri Emperumanar
- Composition of Sri Yathiraja Vimshathi and Sri Aarthi Prabandham - 2 of the most moving tributes ever written for Sri Emperumanar
-
Purvacharya Grantha Samrakshanam:
- Wrote 4000 Divya Prabandha Pasuram Vykahyana Granthas, as and when required [Sri Periyazhwar Thirumozhi]
- Appointed Sri Thiruvazhiyazhwar Pillai to carefully maintain all Granthas [palm leaf manuscripts] written by Purvacharyas
-
Composition of Excellent Nithyanusandhana Granthas for Posterity:
- Sri Upadesharathnamalai for us to know and eulogize all Azhwars and all Acharyas [Divya Prabandha Vyakhyana Acharyas and Rahasya Grantha Acharyas, in particular] and the priceless treasures They have bestowed on us
B.2.5 - 4000 Divya Prabandha Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Highlights |
Again, we can enjoy the very same pattern:
|
B.2.6 - 4000 Divya Prabandha Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Quintessential Paasuram by Sri Jeeyar! |
Sri Varavaramuni Shathakam of Sri Prathivadhi Bhayankaram Anna has extolled the great devotion Sri Jeeyar has for 4000 Divya Prabandham in 22 Shlokams [Shlokam # 40 to Shlokam # 61]. Sri Prathivadhi Bhayankaram Anna has mentioned every single Azhwar, Sri Andal & Sri Madhurakavigal and has explained how Sri Jeeyar is devoted to Them and Their Divya Prabandham.
Sri Jeeyar's own divine words from Sri Upadesha Rathnamalai Pasuram # 3 is sufficient to understand the great devotion He has for 4000 Divya Prabandham:
* Part B.3 - Thiruvaimozhi Samrakshana Kainkaryam * |

B.3.1 - Thiruvaimozhi Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Significance |
After all Azhwars had left for Paramapadham, 2 pathigams [decads] of 4000 Divya Prabandham alone withstood the test of time – the “aaraavamudhE” pathigam of Thiruvaimozhi and the “kanninun sirutthaambu” of Sri Madhurakavi Azhwar.
Only by hearing the rendition of this Thiruvaimozhi pathigam did Sriman Nathamunigal come to know of “kurugoor shatakopan” and the existence of 1000 such pasurams, reached Thirukkurugoor to quench His thirst, chanted the “kanninun sirutthaambu” [which celebrates Sri Azhwar & Thiruvaimozhi] and finally, was blessed with all 4000 Divya Prabandham.
Thus, Sri Azhwar's Thiruvaimozhi and Sri Madhurakavi Azhwar's eulogy of both Sri Azhwar & Thiruvaimozhi became the golden keys to unlock the treasure chest of 4000 Divya Prabandham.
Thiruvaimozhi is the core of 4000 Divya Prabandham and is considered Parama Rahasyam. The entire Iraa Patthu Uthsavam conducted in the Margazhi month is solely to celebrate Thiruvaimozhi. The Pagal Patthu Uthsavam is for the rest of the 3000 Divya Prabandham. Such is the importance of Thiruvaimozhi.
B.3.2 - Thiruvaimozhi Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Sri Azhwar |
The Veda Manthras were not composed by Rishis but were seen by Them through Their eye of knowledge [jnaanakkann] and were revealed out of compassion for mankind. Hence, Rishis are called Manthra Dhrashtas.
Thiruvaimozhi, with 1102 pasurams, is the greatest revelation of Sri Azhwar and is known as Dravida Veda Sagaram or Dravida Brahma Samhitha. It was not composed by Sri Azhwar but was seen and revealed by Him. Therefore, Sri Azhwar is the Manthra Drashta for Thiruvaimozhi.
Even today, Thiruvaimozhi and its Rahasya Arthas are taught only to those Sri Vaishnavas who have undergone Pancha Samskaram from an Acharya. Strictly speaking, this rule is very much applicable to all other Divya Prabandhams as well but, even today, it is reverentially upheld specifically for Thiruvaimozhi.
B.3.3 - Thiruvaimozhi Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Sri Emperumanar |
Sri Emperumanar has a special regard for Thiruvaimozhi and numerous instances can be quoted from His Divya Charithram to elucidate the same. Here are 3 most important kainkaryams of Sri Emperumanar towards Thiruvaimozhi:
-
Divined the Meanings of Thiruvaimozhi Pasurams by Acharya Anugraham:
Sri Azhwar had informed Sriman Nathamunigal that the scion of Sriman Nathamunigal’s lineage would get a fortunate glimpse of Sri Bhavishyathacharya in person. That scion was Sri Alavandhar [aala-vandhaar].
Sri Alavandhar heard of Sri Emperumanar, travelled to Sri Kanchipuram, had a glimpse of Sri Emperumanar and returned to Srirangam. Later, Sri Emperumanar travelled all the way to Srirangam to meet Sri Alavandhar but could only see the Thirumeni of Sri Alavandhar, as Sri Alavandhar had just left for Paramapadham.
Sri Alavandhar had already chosen 5 of His noble Shishyas to impart specific teachings to Sri Emperumanar. He had instructed Sri Thirumalaiyandan [thirumaalai-aaN-daan] to impart the meanings of Thiruvaimozhi.
When Sri Emperumanar commenced learning Thiruvaimozhi Artha Vishesham from Sri Thirumalaiyandan, something peculiar happened several times: Sri Thirumalaiyandan would explain the meaning for a Thiruvaimozhi Pasuram [as understood by Him from Sri Alavandhar] but Sri Emperumanar would humbly suggest a different [and also, the most suitable] meaning for the Pasuram! After a few such events, Sri Thirumalaiyandan refused to continue the lessons.
Another important Shishya of Sri Alavandhar, Sri Thirugoshtiyur Nambigal, learnt of this disagreement, investigated the differences in meanings and explained to Sri Thirumalaiyandan that Sri Emperumanar has indeed suggested only what Sri Alavandhar had explained in many of His Thiruvaimozhi Kalakshepams!
When Sri Thirumalaiyandan asked Sri Emperumanar how He could know what Sri Alavandhar had taught, Sri Emperumanar humbly replied that He is an Ekalavya for Sri Alavandhar. Thus, Sri Emperumanar could comprehend the nuances of Thiruvaimozhi Divya Prabandham by sheer Acharya Anugraham.
-
Revealed Vedantha Arthas with the Guiding Light of Thiruvaimozhi:
One of the main objectives of Sri Emperumanar’s ThiruAvatharam was to reveal the meanings of Vedas and Vedanthas [with Visishtadvaitham as the underlying Siddhantham]. The main Grantham written by Sri Emperumanar to achieve this obejctive was Sri Bhashyam.
Sri Azhwar’s Thiruvaimozhi is the basis for Sri Bhashyam [i.e. using the meanings of Thiruvaimozhi Pasurams, Sri Emperumanar used the Ghataka Shruthis of Veda Vedantha to reconcile the seemingly contradictory Bhedha Shruthis and Abhedha Shruthis].

Commenced the Documentation of Authentic Commentaries for 4000 Divya Prabandham:
Sri Emperumanar commenced the most important kainkaryam towards protection of 4000 Divya Prabandham i.e. the noble kainkaryam of documenting the authentic commentaries for Azhwar Pasurams. He started that noble work with Thiruvaimozhi.
Even when choosing Sri Pillaan, Sri Emperumanar led by example and set the guideline for selecting the right person for writing such divine commentaries.
One day, Sri Emperumanar was analysing the meaning for a specific Thiruvaimozhi Pasuram and had just then determined its meaning [in His heart]. At that moment, Sri Pillaan, who was observing Sri Emperumanar, said, “O Acharya! Isn’t this the meaning that your respected self has thought of for this Pasuram?” and explained the meaning.
Sri Pillaan’s exposition was in complete alignment with what Sri Emperumanar had thought of. Quite overjoyed by the jnaana thejas of Sri Pillaan, Sri Emperumanar selected Him as the right person to document 6000 Padi, the first written commentary for Thiruvaimozhi.
Even today, availability of such glorious commentaries by noble Acharyas has made it impossible for both the ignorant and the malicious to get away with improper explanations for Azhwar Pasurams.
B.3.4 - Thiruvaimozhi Samrakshana Kainkaryam - Sri Jeeyar |
Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai, the great Acharya of Sri Jeeyar, instructed Sri Jeeyar to dedicate His life to propagate 4000 Divya Prabandham [and Thiruvaimozhi in particular]. To honour His Acharya's explicit instructions, Sri Jeeyar did not even participate in Vedantha debates.
After Sri Emperumanar paved way for documentation of commentaries, many more commentaries were born in due course of time. One such commentary was Eedu 36000 Padi for Thiruvaimozhi. This is celebrated by the noble as the most exalted commentary for Thiruvaimozhi and was authored by Sri Nampillai, one of the greatest Acharyas in the Sri Vaishnava Guru Parampara.
Now, here are a few fascinating facts that highlight Sri Jeeyar’s association with Sri Thiruvaimozhi:
- Sri Jeeyar knew both - the 1102 Thiruvaimozhi Pasurams and the complete Eedu 36000 Padi Vyakhyanam for each Thiruvaimozhi Pasuram - by heart [!] and He also recited the commentary passages every day as part of His nithya anusandhanam and parayanam.
- Sri Jeeyar has compiled “Pramaana Thirattu” for Eedu 36000 Padi i.e. He has listed several relevant quotes from Veda Vedanthas, Smrithis, Agamas, Ithihasas, Puranas, etc. to explain how the Eedu 36000 Padi commentary contains only authentic Shasthra Arthas.
-
Sri Vachana Bhushanam, the magnum opus of Sri Pillailokacharyar, is the very essence of the Rahasya Arthas hidden in Thiruvaimozhi. This Rahasya Grantha expresses the Rahasya Arthas of Thiruvaimozhi in the form of complex, terse Soothrams - these are Soothrams that only the truly spiritually elite can decipher.
Sri Jeeyar has written an elaborate Vyakhyanam that has beautifully elucidated the meanings of the Sri Vachana Bhushanam Soothrams.
The hierarchy of nirhethuka krupai or innaruL [causeless compassion] goes like this:
- Sri Azhwar gave us Thruvaimozhi moolam
- Sri Emperumanar gave us the Vedantha arthas extracted out of Thruvaimozhi as Sri Bhashyam
- Sri Nampillai gave us the Eedu 36000 Padi Vyakhyanam for Thruvaimozhi
- Sri Pillailokacharyar extracted precious pearls from Thruvaimozhi & Eedu 36000 Padi and gave us Sri Vachana Bhushanam Rahasya Grantham
- Sri Jeeyar gave us the Sri Vachana Bhushanam Rahasya Grantha Vyakhyanam
In the above-mentioned hierarchy, the Acharya Thirunamams have been listed in the increasing order of compassion and magnanimity.
Sri Jeeyar is the most compassionate and most magnanimous of all as He helped us obtain the deepest Rahasyas of Thiruvaimozhi. Sri Jeeyar's Bhakthi towards Sri Pillailokacharyar and Sri Vachana Bhushanam cannot be described in words.
Also, Sri Jeeyar's contribution did not end with just writing the Vyakhyanam for Sri Vachana Bhushanam - Sri Jeeyar made that extensive jnaanam of His blossom as anushtaanam. He lived exactly as directed by Sri Pillailokacharyar in Sri Vachana Bhushanam. Living according to Sri Vachana Bhushanam is too formidable a standard that one may conclude that it is impossible for mere mortals to do so.
-
Sri Jeeyar composed the brilliant “Thiruvaimozhi Nootranthathi” that encapsulates the core message of every Thiruvaimozhi pathigam [pathigam = 1 decad containing 11-12 Pasurams] in a single venbaa pasuram.
The core message communicated by Sri Jeeyar in every such Thiruvaimozhi Nootranthathi pasuram is nothing but the Eedu 36000 Padi summary of the corresponding Thiruvaimozhi pathigam. Of course, every Pasuram also declares that the lotus feet of Sri Azhwar is our sole refuge and one must remember that the lotus feet of Sri Azhwar is none but Sri Emperumanar.
- Even at the time of leaving for Paramapadham, when Shishyas asked, “O Acharya! What is your esteemed self thinking of now?”, pat came the reply from Sri Jeeyar: “My heart is filled with the nectar-like meanings of Thiruvaimozhi as explained in Eedu 36000 Padi.”

B.4.1 - Sriranga Mangalashasana Kainkaryam - Significance |
All Azhwars and Sri Vaishnava Acharyas exhibited immense devotion for Sri Ranganatha Perumal. 2 key facts about Srirangam Perumal are:
- Sri Ranganatha Perumal is the Ruler of all 108 Divyadesams [incl. Paramapadham]
- Sri Ranganatha Perumal is the first Acharya in the Sri Vaishnava Guru Parampara
B.4.2 - Sriranga Mangalashasana Kainkaryam - Sri Azhwar |
Sri Azhwar has rendered a Thiruvaimozhi Pathigam [7-2, “kangulum pagalum”] for Srirangam. This is a special pathigam because it has been rendered in the Naayikaa Bhaavam, the point where flawless aathma svaroopa jnaanam culminates in boundless parama bhakthi i.e. the Jivathma fully realizes that She is a sthree and that Bhagavan alone is the Parama Purushan. Therefore, in this bhaavam, passionate, natural love for Bhagavan flows like a perennial river gleefully gushing at the point where it meets the ocean.
Acharya Sri Parashara Bhattar had once clarified that Srirangam Thirukkoil is not protected by its formidable walls but is actually protected by the Mangalaashaasana Pasurams sung by Azhwars. The same Acharya also composed a Thaniyan for Thiruvaimozhi, where He clearly says that all 1102 Pasurams of Thiruvaimozhi were indeed rendered only for the lotus feet of Sri Ranganatha Perumal.
Note: Our Acharyas have advised us to chant Azhwar Pasurams every day. When we do that, we actually protect Divyadesams. Emperuman responds to the chanting by bestowing His sampoorna saannidhyam in the Divyadesams. When we chant for Srirangam, we are doing it for all 108 Divyadesams.
B.4.3 - Sriranga Mangalashasana Kainkaryam - Sri Emperumanar |
Sri Emperumanar had completely laid down the administrative rules for managing Srirangam Thirukkoil. And, to ensure that we too do our regular mangalaashaasanam for the welfare of Sri Ranganatha Perumal and Srirangam, Sri Emperumanar included “sriman srirangasriyam anupadravaam anudinam samvardhaya” praarthana in our Saatrumurai.
While there are many incidents one can quote to demonstrate Sri Emperumanar’s love for Sri Ranganatha Perumal, quoting a poignant, self-explanatory incident here:
One day, Sri Emperumanar noticed something that no one else noticed - Sri Ranganatha Perumal Uthsavar looked tired and pale.
“What dish was offered to Him today?” asked a highly concerned Sri Emperumanar. Sri Mudhaliyandan, who had been appointed by Sri Emperumanar to supervise the Srirangam Thirukkoil daily administration, replied: “O Acharya, we offered well-cooked rice mixed with pure curd. I had asked the cook to garnish it with a liberal handful of His favourite jamun fruits.”
“Alas! It’s precisely that incorrect combination of foods that has caused indigestion, Mudhaliyandan!” chided Sri Emperumanar. And then, Sri Emperumanar instructed, “May a glass of kashaayam be offered to Him!” The order was immediately executed. After a while, Sri Emperumanar observed, “Ah look! Now, He looks cured and cheerful!”
From that day, Sri Emperumanar introduced 2 new administrative orders in Srirangam:
- Every day, all naivedhyam meant for Sri Ranganatha Perumal must first be purified by the glances of Sri Dhanvanthari Perumal
- Every day, a glass of kashaayam must be offered to Sri Ranganatha Perumal after naivedhyam!
B.4.4 - Sriranga Mangalashasana Kainkaryam - Sri Jeeyar |
A dark era had ensued after the barbaric Islamic onslaught on Srirangam. Sri Jeeyar’s ThiruAvatharam took place right around the time when Sri Ranganatha Perumal [Uthsavar] was brought back to Srirangam after 48 long years.
Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai, the noble Acharya of Sri Jeeyar, had instructed Sri Jeeyar to permanently reside in Srirangam and perform mangalaashaasanam for Sri Ranganatha Perumal.
For the sake of His Acharya Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai’s joy, Sri Jeeyar shifted His residence from Sri Azhwar Thirunagari to Srirangam. Initially, He was in the Gruhastha Ashrama. On a couple of occasions, Sri Jeeyar could not go inside the Srirangam Temple because of aashoucham [theettu due to birth or passing away of relatives]. With a singular objective to avoid such obstacles in carrying out His Acharya’s orders regarding mangalaashaasanam of Sri Ranganatha Perumal, Sri Jeeyar undertook Sanyasa Ashrama!
Sri Jeeyar’s entire Dhinacharya began with mangalaashaasanam of Sri Ranganatha Perumal as soon as He woke up before dawn, followed by the mandatory step of visiting the Temple and performing mangalaashaasanam for Sri Ranganatha Perumal and ended with the same in the night. Sri Jeeyar did this only for the joy of His Acharya Sri Thiruvaimozhi Pillai and His Dhaivam Sri Emperumanar. He had no other purpose.
Sri Jeeyar’s presence was shuddhasathva mayam and hence, parama mangalakaram. His continuous, dedicated, wholehearted mangalaashaasanam completely rejuvenated both Srirangam and Sri Ranganatha Perumal.
Sri Jeeyar also managed the administration of the Thirukkoil and ensured that all rules laid by Sri Emperumanar were resumed. Post the barbaric Islamic attack, there was a steep drop in the adherence to Sri Ramanujarya Divyagnya. With due gratitude to Sri Jeeyar, good times returned to Srirangam.
Sri Jeeyar’s ThiruAvathara Kaalam is known as the “Golden Era of Sri Vaishnavam” [filled with abundant tranquility and unperturbed mangalaashaasana kainkaryam for Sri Ranganatha Perumal]. And, this is why Sri Jeeyar is celebrated as “Koil Manavala Mamunigal” ["Koil", by default, means Srirangam].

Here are 3 beautiful events regarding Sri Ranganatha Perumal's affection for Sri Azhwar:
-
Sri Thirumangai Azhwar had obtained a boon from Sri Ranganatha Perumal that He must celebrate Thiruvaimozhi and 4000 Divya Prabandha Uthsavam [called Iraa Patthu and Pagal Patthu] in Srirangam during the month of Margazhi. Sri Ranganatha Perumal gladly agreed and granted the boon. Sri Thirumangai Azhwar wanted to escort Sri Azhwar’s Thirumeni from Azhwar Thirunagari to Srirangam, for the sake of the Uthsavam. So, Sri Ranganatha Perumal wrote a Srimukham [letter] to Azhwar Thirunagari Sri Azhwar and, in that letter, He addressed Sri Azhwar as “Nam Azhwar” and thus revealed that Sri Azhwar is very dear to Him.
-
Also, when the divine poet Sri Kambar was about to perform the Arangetram of Sri Kamba Ramayanam in front of Sri Ranganatha Perumal, Sri Ranganatha Perumal asked, “O great poet Kambar! Have you praised my Shatakopan yet?” Sri Kambar then composed “Sri Shatakopar Anthaathi”, presented that as the first offering for Sri Ranganatha Perumal and later, successfully performed Sri Kamba Ramayanam Arangetram.
-
When Srirangam bled due to the barbaric Islamic invasion, Sri Pillailokacharyar escorted Sri Ranganatha Perumal and took Him to Madurai. After Sri Pillailokacharyar reached Paramapadham, Sri Ranganatha Perumal was taken to Kozhikode of Kerala. The retinue that had escorted Sri Nammazhwar out of Sri Azhwar Thirunagari too had reached Kozhikode! At that time, Sri Ranganatha Perumal addressed Sri Azhwar as “Nam Azhwar”, ordered that Sri Azhwar must be placed right beside Him on the same Peetam and also, gifted Sri Azhwar with His pearl-studded garment. Thus, Sri Ranganatha Perumal had revealed that He had joyfully accepted Sri Azhwar’s Pasurams for Srirangam [which were rendered in Naayikaa Bhaavam].

Here are 3 beautiful events regarding Sri Ranganatha Perumal's affection for Sri Emperumanar:
-
When Sri Emperumanar reached Srirangam to lead the Sri Vaishnava Sampradayam, Sri Ranganatha Perumal accorded Him a grand welcome and declared that Sri Emperumanar shall henceforth be the owner of both Paramapadham and all other worlds outside Paramapadham. Therefore, He conferred the title of “Udayavar” [Owner] on Sri Emperumanar.
-
Once, when Thiruvarangan came out in a procession [Thiruveethi Purappaadu], He was eager to listen to 'Sri Ramanuja Nootranthathi' chanted by the Divya Prabandha Parayana Goshti. As He knew that Sri Emperumanar, who was leading the Goshti in the front, would be too modest to even think of the idea, He simply ordered that Sri Emperumanar may leave the place and that no musical instrument [meant for the procession] must be played. And then, He happily listened to Sri Ramanuja Nootranthathi and also, declared that it must be included in the 4000 Divya Prabandham.
-
When Sri Emperumanar returned to Paramapadham, Sri Ranganatha Perumal announced an unprecedented order that the Charama Thirumeni [the divine body of Sri Emperumanar] must be buried within the premises of the Srirangam Temple [Vasantha Mantapam]. This is why the Divya Mangala Vigraha of Sri Emperumanar at Srirangam is famously known as "Thaan Aana Thirumeni" - the Thirumeni that is Swami Himself.
C.3 - Sri Ranganatha Perumal Vishesha Abhimanam - Sri Jeeyar |
Sri Ranganatha Perumal ordered that all His Uthsavams must be cancelled and, for almost a year, He celebrated only 1 Uthsavam - He listened to Sri Jeeyar elaborating the special meanings of the Thiruvaimozhi [according to Eedu 36000 Padi and other Acharya Vyakhyanams].
Sri Ranganatha Perumal celebrates 300+ Uthsavams in a year. Him cancelling all Uthsavams so that He could do nothing but happily enjoy Sri Jeeyar's Kalakshepam is a unique honour conferred on the Acharya indeed.
In the end, He was overwhelmed with joy and became the Shishya of Sri Jeeyar by reciting a Thaniyan [a short but profound verse of praise] in honour of Sri Jeeyar [called Srishailesha Thaniyan / Srishailesha Manthram]. Sri Ranganatha Perumal successfully fulfills all 5 duties of a Shishya towards Sri Jeeyar viz:
- Recite a Thaniyan in honour of the Acharya
- Spread the glories of the Acharya: Sri Ranganatha Perumal sent a message to all Divyadesams, in which He instructed that 4000 Divya Prabandha Parayanam must both commence and end with the Thaniyan.
- Offer all wealth to the Acharya: Sri Ranganatha Perumal placed His greatest wealth – Sri Adhishesha Peetam – at Sri Manavala Mamunigal’s service.
- Adorn oneself with the name of the Acharya: Sri Ranganatha Perumal is also known as Sri “Ramya Jaamaathaa” [Sri Azhagiya Manavaalan] and Sri Manavala Mamunigal is Sri “Ramya Jaamaathru Muni” [Sri Azhagiya Manavaala Maamunigal].
- Grandly celebrate Acharya's Thirunakshathram [birthday] and Thiruvadhyayanam [the day the Acharya reached Paramapadham]: Even today, Sri Ranganatha Perumal duly honours Sri Manavala Mamunigal’s Aippasi Thirumoolam Thirunakshathram and Maasi Krishna Paksha Dwadashi Thiruvadhyayanam. On the day of Thiruvadhyayanam, Sri Ranganatha Perumal accepts Naivedhyam only after the Thiruvadhyayanam Kainkaryam is completed in Sri Jeeyar's Matam at Srirangam.

Sri Vanamamalai Ramanuja Jeeyar, also famously known as Sri Ponnadikkaal Jeeyar, is the first and foremost Shishya of Sri Manavala Mamunigal and is a phenomenal Acharya Abhimana Nishtar. He is the first Jeeyar of the glorious Sri Vanamamalai Mutt.
Sri Manavala Mamunigal, who is also affectionately referred to as Sri Periya Jeeyar, declared that Sri Ponnadikkaal Jeeyar is His praanaa suhruth [i.e. a bosom friend who is akin to the very life force] and always bade His Shishyas to treat Sri Ponnadikkaal Jeeyar with the same respectful devotion that they would offer to Him. Hence, the Shishyas of Sri Vanamamalai Mutt always chant the following 2 lines together as a single chant:
Azhwar Emperumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Sharanam
Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Sharanam
The word "Jeeyar" in the 2nd line of this chant refers to Sri Ponnadikkaal Jeeyar.
Conclusion |
Hope this post does provide some insights regarding why Sri Vaishnavas Elders chanted "Azhwar Emperumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Sharanam" and passed on the wisdom to us as well.
Going by the quotations given from the compositions of Ashtadiggajas, one can infer that the Ashtadiggajas wholeheartedly appreciated and celebrated Sri Jeeyar, Their superlative fortune! Driven by Their innate compassion for us, They composed a fraction of Their awesome anubhavam as Granthas so that we too can taste the nectar They had relished.
Their Bhakthi for Sri Jeeyar is as natural and enrapturing as that of the lotus for the rising sun and as that of the peacock for the rain-bearing clouds. That being said, Their devotion is not an unfounded, blind adulation for someone unworthy either! It rather stems from the pure jnaanam that Sri Jeeyar is truly our Swami. They fully appreciated that Sri Jeeyar is the very embodiment of everything a true follower of Sri Azhwar and Sri Emperumanar must be.
This is why They sang Pallaandu for Sri Jeeyar and declared His Golden Lotus Feet as both the ultimate goal and the only route to attain that goal:
